Ranking #1 and still invisible: the new gap

John O'Connor

A simple way to check whether AI engines name your firm — and what it means when they don't.

The fastest way to find out is to ask the engines the questions your prospects ask, and see whether your firm’s name appears in the answer. You don’t need special tooling to start — you need a short list of real queries and a few minutes.

Run the check yourself

Pick five questions a potential client might type. For a personal injury firm, that might be:

  • “Best personal injury lawyer in [your city]”
  • “What should I do after a car accident in [your state]?”
  • “How much does a personal injury lawyer cost?”

Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview. Note two things: whether any firm is named, and whether it’s yours.

Reading the result

There are three common outcomes:

  1. A competitor is named and you aren’t. The model has decided someone else is the credible source. This is the gap GEO closes.
  2. No firm is named. The category is still open. Being the first credible, well-structured source is a real advantage.
  3. You’re named. Good — now the work is staying there as the models update.

Why “we rank well” isn’t the same answer

A firm can hold the top organic position and still be invisible in AI answers. Ranking measures where you sit on a results page. AI visibility measures whether a model trusts you enough to cite you. They’re related but not identical, and the second is increasingly where attention goes first.

If the check turns up a gap, it’s usually not a content-quality problem. It’s a signals problem: the model can’t yet tell that your firm is the authority. That’s fixable — and it’s exactly what a visibility system is built to do.
